"I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend."
"I will revenge my injuries; if I cannot inspire love,
I will cause fear"

Mary Shelley Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, 30 August 1797 – 1 February 1851, was a British novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818)

Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein was inspired by a "waking dream" she had during a sleepless night in 1816, where she imagined a scientist creating a life-like creature, which then became the basis for the story.

In her dream, Shelley envisioned a scientist at work on a "hideous phantasm of a man" who, upon being animated, stirred with an "uneasy, half-vital motion".

Shelley's dream became the foundation for her novel, Frankenstein, which explores themes of creation, responsibility, and the dangers of unchecked scientific ambition.

While on holiday with Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and Dr. John Polidori at Villa Diodati near Lake Geneva, Shelley had a "waking dream" or reverie that provided the germ of the story.
